As your skin ages, it loses volume and elasticity, not only on the surface but in the deeper support layers as well. Dr. Hal Wilson of Maxwell Medical Group in Scottsdale, Arizona, recommends the Juvéderm® line of filler gels to treat passive lines and wrinkles or to add volume to your cheeks and lips. Juvederm Q & A

What is Juvéderm?

A series of injectable gels, each designed with a specific purpose, the Juvéderm line of products are dermal fillers, intended to provide a long-lasting treatment for lines and wrinkles on your face, as well as supplementing volume of your cheeks and lips.

Juvéderm products are based on hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance that’s found naturally within your skin, that attracts and traps moisture, an essential element of youthful looking skin. Each Juvéderm product has its formulation and characteristics that suit its intended application. The current Juvéderm lineup includes:

  • Juvéderm Ultra XC: intended for moderate to severe wrinkles and parentheses lines near your nose and mouth
  • Juvéderm Ultra Plus XC: similar to Juvéderm XC, except the gel is thicker providing a greater fill when injected
  • Juvéderm Vollure™ XC: used to soften facial wrinkles and lines, from moderate to severe
  • Juvéderm Voluma® XC: a dermal filler that lifts and contours cheeks
  • Juvéderm Volbella® XC: a volumizer for lips that also fills vertical lip lines

How do Juvéderm fillers work?

One property of skin that provides smooth and youthful appearance is its elasticity, particularly in the epidermis, or outer layer of your skin. As it ages, it no longer stretches and contracts the way it did when you were younger.

Compounding this, the middle layer, or dermis, sees a deterioration of its collagen components, which develop crags and fissures over time, and with moisture loss. These two factors conspire to create lines and wrinkles as the looser epidermis sags into voids in the collagen support layer. Collagen loss also contributes to lost volume in the cheeks and lips.

The gels in Juvéderm products fill these fissures or add volume to compensate for the lost tissue when injected into the dermis layer. Each Juvéderm filler has its own diffusion characteristics so that some gels stay close to the injection site while others spread and blend for natural results. Think of the Juvéderm line as a palette for Dr. Wilson and his team to use to create the effects you’re after.

Is Juvéderm safe?

The most common side effect of dermal filler injections is minor redness and irritation at the injection site. The HA formulation of Juvéderm products is biologically inert, creating cosmetic improvements that can last up to two years in ideal applications.
